How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost? A Budget Guide for Local Businesses

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Self-serve ChatGPT ads have no minimum contract; the floor is a $25 average daily budget per campaign in the US.
- OpenAI suggests starting cost-per-click bids at $3 to $5, and you pay per click or per thousand views, never per conversion.
- A daily budget is a weekly average, so a single day can spend up to twice the daily figure.
- Your card is charged each time unpaid spend reaches a payment threshold and again at month end, so new accounts see several small charges.
- OpenAI publishes no performance benchmarks yet, so any quoted cost per lead is an estimate.
The short answer
Self-serve ChatGPT ads have no minimum contract. In the US the smallest campaign is a $25 average daily budget, which comes to roughly $760 a month if it runs every day. You pay per click, per thousand views, or on a conversion-optimized basis that still bills per click or view, and OpenAI suggests starting click bids at $3 to $5. Management, landing pages and follow-up are separate costs.
That covers the platform. Whether it is worth the money depends almost entirely on what happens outside the platform, which is where most of this guide spends its time. Figures are from OpenAI's Help Center as of October 30, 2026.
How the pricing works
ChatGPT ads are sold in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. You set the most you are willing to pay, and when your ad wins you generally pay less than that maximum, based on the competition. Relevance is part of the score, so a well-matched ad with a strong landing page can beat a higher bid.
You choose how you are billed when you choose the campaign objective. The objective cannot be changed afterward, so picking the wrong one means building a new campaign.
| Objective | You pay for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Every 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Awareness in your area |
| Clicks | Each valid click (CPC) | Most local businesses starting out |
| Conversions, click billing | Each valid click (oCPC) | Accounts with working conversion tracking |
| Conversions, impression billing | Every 1,000 impressions (oCPM) | Larger accounts with steady conversion data |
Conversion-optimized campaigns are easy to misread. The system aims your budget at people likely to complete the action you chose, such as submitting a lead, but you still pay per click or per thousand views. Nothing on the platform today bills per lead.
The minimums, and how budgets really behave
The minimum daily budget depends on your billing currency: $25 in US dollars, 25 Canadian dollars, 15 euros or 15 pounds. There is no monthly minimum and no contract for self-serve accounts. OpenAI ran a focused pilot from February to April 2026; the self-serve Ads Manager that followed is open to any eligible business.
The part that surprises people is pacing. A daily budget is the average you want to spend across a Sunday to Saturday week, not a hard limit on each day. On a busy day a campaign can spend up to twice the daily figure, and over the week it will not exceed seven times it. If a campaign uses up its weekly allowance early, it can stop delivering until the next week even though it still shows as active.
If you need certainty about total spend, use a campaign-total budget instead. It is the stricter control. You can switch a total budget to a daily one later, but not back again.
How billing hits your card
ChatGPT Ads bills after the ads run. Each account has a payment threshold: when unpaid spend reaches it, your card is charged, and whatever remains at the end of the month is charged then. New accounts start low, and OpenAI's own example uses a $25 threshold, which rises automatically as you build payment history. You cannot change the threshold yourself.
In practice a new account spending $25 a day may see a charge most days at first, then fewer, larger charges over time. Two charges for the same amount usually mean the threshold was reached twice, not a duplicate. Adding a card can also place a temporary authorization hold that stays on your statement for a week or longer before it is released.
If a payment fails, ads can stop delivering until it is fixed, so use a card with room on it.
What about $760 a month could buy
Here is the arithmetic for a single campaign at the US minimum budget, at both ends of OpenAI's suggested starting bid. It is illustrative, not a forecast. OpenAI states that it does not yet have performance benchmarks, and your actual cost per click will be set by the auction.
| At $3 per click | At $5 per click | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly spend | About $760 | About $760 |
| Clicks | About 250 | About 150 |
| Inquiries if 5% of visitors get in touch | About 13 | About 8 |
| Inquiries if 10% of visitors get in touch | About 25 | About 15 |
| Cost per inquiry | $30 to $60 | $50 to $100 |
The row that matters most is the one you control. Doubling the landing page's conversion rate halves the cost of every inquiry, which is far cheaper than doubling the budget. Then multiply by how many inquiries your team actually turns into booked jobs. A $60 inquiry is cheap for a $12,000 roof and expensive for a $150 service call.
The costs outside Ads Manager
Management
If someone manages the campaign for you, that fee is separate from ad spend. A sensible arrangement keeps the ad account and the card in your name and the management fee flat and in writing, so nobody earns more by spending more of your money.
Landing pages
Every ad group should point to a page about that service. If those pages do not exist yet, building them is a real cost, and usually the best money you will spend on the channel. The same pages help your Google traffic too.
Follow-up
Paid clicks are among the most expensive inquiries you will get, so slow follow-up costs the most here. If inquiries sit unanswered for hours, the budget above buys very little. An automatic text reply that goes out in seconds costs less than any amount of extra ad spend; we have written about what slow response costs a trades business.

BOOK A DEMOHow to set a first budget
Start with the smallest budget that will produce enough clicks to learn from in four to six weeks. For most local businesses that is the minimum, or a little above it, on one service in one area. Measure cost per click, cost per inquiry and booked jobs rather than impressions, and increase spend only once inquiries are being answered and booked.
Fund the test from a growth budget, not by switching off a channel that is already producing work. If you run Google Ads, keep them running; our comparison of ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads for contractors covers how the two fit together. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads? A: Not as a contract. Self-serve campaigns need a minimum daily budget, $25 in the US, which is averaged over a week. There is no monthly minimum for self-serve accounts.
Q: Do I pay per lead? A: No. You pay per click or per thousand impressions. Conversion-optimized campaigns aim delivery at people likely to convert but still bill per click or per thousand views.
Q: Why was I charged the same amount twice? A: Usually because your account reached its payment threshold twice. You are charged each time unpaid spend reaches the threshold, plus once at the end of the month for any remaining balance.
Q: Why did one day spend more than my daily budget? A: Daily budgets are weekly averages. A single day can reach up to twice the daily amount, as long as the Sunday to Saturday week stays within seven times it.
Q: Are ChatGPT ads cheaper than Google Ads? A: There are no published benchmarks yet to say. Compare cost per booked job on each channel once you have a few weeks of data, rather than comparing cost per click on day one.
Q: How quickly does spend show up in reporting? A: Impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, but spend can lag by seven to eight hours. A zero spend figure early in the day does not mean nothing has been charged.
